Ivory Coast urges expats to stay

European nations have been evacuating their nationals from Ivory Coast

President Laurent Gbagbo of Ivory Coast has urged foreigners fleeing the

violence in his country to stay.

His government was taking steps to assure their safety, Mr Gbagbo said.

His statement came as public services were restored in the north of the West

African country, after several days of protests and looting.

Violence erupted in the south last week after Ivorian forces bombed

rebel-held towns in the north and killed nine French peacekeepers and a US

citizen.

Anti-French riots followed last weekend after France destroyed the Ivorian

air force, in retaliation for the peacekeeper deaths.

Regional leaders are to hold an emergency crisis summit on Sunday.

Accusations

Hundreds of Europeans were evacuated on Friday amid the continuing exodus of

foreigners from the government-held south.

British citizens were the latest to leave, after their country deployed

troops to neighbouring Ghana to help with the evacuation of some 400

civilians.

Q&A: Renewed crisis

Was French response right?

Eyewitness: Mobs on rampage

French President Jacques Chirac pledged that France would act "tirelessly"

to ensure the safety of foreigners in its former colony.

His comments came as French military officials said some French women were

raped in the violence that swept through Ivory Coast's main southern city of

Abidjan.

In five days of looting and demonstrations, the government says 62 people

were killed and nearly 1,300 were injured as French troops repulsed

demonstrators.

The Ivorian minister of justice has said France should be tried in the

International Court of Justice for its actions in Ivory Coast.

Crisis talks

Meanwhile, South African-brokered peace meditations with Ivorian opposition

leaders are continuing in Pretoria, without the participation of the main

rebel group.

The New Forces says it will join talks only if President Gbagbo resigns.

The African Union (AU) chairman, Nigeria's President Olusegun Obasanjo, has

invited leaders from Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal, Libya and Ivory

Coast to talks on the crisis.

The civil war, which has split the country in two, resumed a week ago

The Ivorian armed forces re-started hostilities after missed deadlines for

reforms and disarmament convinced all sides a peace process would not work,

the BBC's James Copnall in Abidjan says.

The United Nations Security Council has postponed discussion on the crisis

to allow the South African president to hold talks with the opposition

leaders.

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) says 5,000 Ivorians have fled to Liberia. It

says it is concerned that more will follow, which could possibly destabilise

Liberia's fragile peace.

Eyewitness: Ivory Coast terror

Pro-government mobs have been targeting French citizens

A French citizen tells the BBC why a return to violence in Ivory Coast is

forcing him to flee.

As we take a turn on the road to the city where we are now, I see on my

right side a guy wearing a black tee-shirt who just throws a rock at my

car...

He snaps his finger to another guy on the other side of the car who also

throws a rock, this time at my windshield.

But the first rock, I have to say, nearly killed my wife because it came

through the passenger side...

So at that moment I just pressed the gas on and drove all the way out of

Abidjan.

'Feeling of disaster'

There was no way for them to know that I was French because there are, as

you know, French people of all colours but it is obviously a white question.

And what shocked me the most, if you will, is the two guys were hurling the

rocks at the car, they were maybe, four metres - five metres from the car.

So they absolutely saw there was a woman and two small children in the car.

But that didn't stop them at all.

[My black Ivorian friends] call us and basically their take is a feeling of

disaster.

They call us to take news and to get information, see how we are doing, give

us advice on what to do and what not to do. So obviously a caring

community - a normal community.

Schools burnt

If my citizenship is based on my colour then I cannot but welcome the troops

that are here to protect me and my family.

So to me it is a very simple case: when my wife was hit by the rock, I

stopped at a police station about 200 metres from where that incident

happened and I was basically insulted back into my car by the military and

the police who were there.

So I drove on and inside my heart I knew what side I was on.

[This situation will] force us out of the country for a very simple reason:

I am a family man.

They have burnt down the four schools that we could send our children to, so

it is game over as far as we're concerned.

It is not an easy decision because I was born in this country, my wife was

born in this country, my two children were born in this country, my father

is buried in this country and to be treated like that and to be denied any

sort of citizenship just because of race is absolutely unacceptable.

ANOTHER EXAMPLE..

Good day,

I am Mrs.Maria.S.Morgan from Liberia, presently

Staying in Ghana. I was married to Mr.Amir Jude Morgan

who worked with Liberian embassy in Lome-Togo for ten

years before he died in the year 2002.We were married

for eleven years without a child. He died in a cold

blood murder during a fight which broke out in

(Monrovia)the capital city of Liberia.

Before his death we were very devoted Christian.

Since his death I decided not to re-marry or get a

Child outside my matrimonial home which I believe is

The best way to live as my love one is gone.

When my late husband was alive he deposited

a total of 150kg of gold ,3,000 karats of diamond,

and a huge sum of money amounting to $23,500,000,00

(Twenty three million and five hundred thousand

American state dollars only) this money was gotten

From the sales of Gold and Diamond before the war

Broke out, all concealed in 2 trunk boxes, with

one security Company in Ghana Presently,

these boxes is still with the Security Company.

Recently, my Doctor told me that I would not live for

more than Ten months due to cancer problem. The one

that disturbs me most is my stroke sickness. Having

known my condition I decided to keep this boxes in the

security company till I find a way of getting it to my

only surviving sister to use it for the propagation of

the work of God, but I was informed that she died at

child birth two months ago, thereby leaving me

stranded as to what to do next.

I want an organization or an individual that will

market this minerals and use the fund for orphanages,

Widows, propagating the word of God and to endeavour

that the house of God is maintained. The Holy Book

made us to understand that Blessed is the hand that

giveth, which we know as taught by the holy book of God

I took this decision because I don't have any child

that will inherit this money and my husband relatives

are not good Christians and I don't want my husband's efforts

to be used by unbelievers. I don't want a situation

where this money will be used in an ungodly way. This

is why I am taking this decision.

I am not afraid of death as I know that I have

Fulfilled the conditions of the Almighty God where I am going.

I know that I am going to be in the bosom of the

Almighty God.

I don't need any telephone communication in this

regard because of my health hence the presence of my

husband's relatives around me always.I don't want

them to know about this development. With God all

things are possible.

As soon as I receive your reply I shall inform the

security company that you are the beneficiary of the

said boxes and you will need to have them delivered to

you in The United States or that they should arrange

to release it to you directly if you chose to

personally travel to Ghana. I will also issue you an

authority letter that will prove you the present

beneficiary of this boxes.

I want you and the organization to always pray for me

because God is great. My happiness is that I lived a

life of a worthy Child of God.Whoever that wants to serve

God must serve him in spirit, truth and faith.

Please always be prayerful all through your life.

Any delay in your reply will give me room in sourcing

another person for this same purpose. Please assure

me that you will act accordingly as I stated herein.

You can contact my doctor on this email address:Dr.Mark Kwame

(drmarkkwame@yahoo.co.uk)

Hoping to receive your reply and remain blessed in

God.

Your sister in faith.

Mrs Maria.S. Morgan

- - - another scam - - --

Dear: sir/madam

I know you will be surprised to receive this business proposal. First, I must introduce myself. I am Tan Aagh, from the Diamond-rich district of Kono,Sierra Leone, and my father was the former Special adviser to the ousted Head of State of Sierra Leone,Major Paul Koroma.

During the war between our forces led by the ex-Head of State, Major Paul Koroma and the West Africa Allied Forces (ECOMOG), my country relied heavily on the foreign earnings generated from diamond trade. This money was personally kept by then President,Major Paul Koroma Since our banking system had collapsed during the war.

However, as the war progressed, it became apparent that we were going to loose the war to the superior and better armed West African Allied Forces (ECOMOG). At this point, the key officers of the administration started making frantic efforts on how to leave SierraLeone safely thereby sharing the proceeds/money from this diamond trade. In view of the fact that my father was one of the key officers of the administration and a brother-in-law to Major Paul Koroma, he succeeded in getting the sum of US$22.5 Million (Twenty-two Million Five hundred United States Dollars).

We made agreement and transferred the money through diplomatic means to South Africa, where I am presently residing in exile as asylum seeker but unfortunately,my father died of heart attack after a few months of exile in South Africa and automatically, I became in total control of the said money

as the first child. Upon our arrival in South Africa after due consideration, we deposited the money with a Security Company for the security reasons. The actual content was not disclosed to them (Security company) pending when we see a trustworthy person such as yourself who will assist us in transferring this money to his or her account outside South Africa, as the strict monetary laws here do not allow asylum seekers certain financial rights.

I shall be most grateful if you can assist me accomplish this transaction and hoping too that you will remain trustworthy. For your efforts and assistance, I have agreed to give you 20% of the total sum while 10% will be aside for all the expenses incurred in the course of this transaction.

The rest of the 70% will be for my family investment in your country.

Please note that this transaction is 100% Risk Free, for I have made arrangements for a successful deal. As such, the only thing I ask from you is total assistance to transfer this money, complete trust and assurance that my own part of money will be safe when transferred to your account. I wish you would keep this proposal highly confidential and secret, considering my father's position before his death and source of the money.your response will be appriciated.

Best regards.

Mr Tan Agah
