Octothorpe is another name for what common computer keyboard symbol?

#

#

Answer: The # symbol is commonly called the pound sign, number sign and more recently the hashtag. However, its official name is the the octothorpe. The word was invented in the same laboratories where the telephone came from. The scientists at Bell Laboratories modified the telephone keypad in the early 1960s and added the # symbol to send instructions to the telephone operating system. According to one report, Bell Lab employee Don MacPherson named it after the Olympian Jim Thorpe. However, another former employee claims it was a nonsense word that was a joke.

VIETNAM WAR

Answer: On this day in 1971, The New York Times began to publish sections of the so-called “Pentagon Papers,” a top-secret Department of Defense study of America’s involvement in the Vietnam War. As the Vietnam War dragged on, military analyst Daniel Ellsberg—who had worked on the study—came to oppose the war, and decided that the information contained in the Pentagon Papers should be available to the American public. He photocopied the report and gave the copy to The New York Times, which then published a series of scathing articles based on the report’s most damning secrets.

Harry Truman

Answer: Harry Truman was given a middle initial, but not a middle name. Truman's parents chose "S" as his middle name to please both of his grandfathers. The "S" in Harry S. Truman actually refers to the names of both of his grandfathers, Anderson Shipp Truman and Solomon Young. The question of whether to use a period after the "S" in Harry S. Truman's name has become a subject of controversy. In 1962, Truman told reporters that they should not use a period after the S, because it didn't stand for anything. However, the U.S. Government Printing Office Style Manual states that the period should be used after the "S" in Harry S. Truman's name.

FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA

Answer: Nicolas Cage is the nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola, and the cousin of directors Roman Coppola and Sofia Coppola, At fifteen years old he tried to convince his uncle, Francis Ford Coppola, to give him a screen test, telling him "I'll show you acting." His outburst was met with "silence in the car". By this stage of his career, Coppola had already directed Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Gene Hackman and Robert De Niro. To avoid the appearance of nepotism as Coppola's nephew, he changed his name early in his career to Nicolas Cage, inspired in part by the Marvel Comics superhero Luke Cage.

Answer: The average age of a father of a newborn in the United States was 30.9 years old, according to a Stanford University report. Researchers analyzed 168,867,480 births -- all the live births reported in the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Vital Statistics System from 1972 to 2015. Men over the age of 40 make up 9% of all U.S. births (that number more than doubled from 4.1% since 1973), whereas men over the age of 50 account for nearly 1%. The youngest dad for the period studied was just 11 years old, while the oldest was 88.

DISH TEXAS

Answer: DISH is a town in Denton County, Texas. This community was originally named Clark. In November 2005, the community accepted an offer to rename itself "DISH" (all capital letters) as part of a commercial agreement with a satellite television company. In exchange for renaming the town, all residents of the town have received free basic television service for ten years and a free DVR from Dish Network. There was no formal opposition to renaming Clark; twelve citizens attended the council meeting to support the measure.

What was the most recent letter added to the English alphabet?

J

16 hours ago, dgrimm60 said:

LETTER  J

Answer: “Z” may be the last letter in alphabetical order, but the last letter added to our alphabet was actually “J.” It is no coincidence that “I” and “J” stand side-by-side—for centuries they were considered the same character! The letter “J” started as a swash, a typographical embellishment for the already existing “I” used to denote the conclusion of a series of ones—as in “Henry viij” for Henry the Eighth. Both I and J were used interchangeably to express the sound of both the vowel and the consonant, until 1524 when Renaissance grammarian Gian Giorgio Trissino argued for J’s autonomy. After being snubbed for nearly three more centuries, “J” was finally acknowledged as a full-fledged letter in the English alphabet.
