GEORGE WASHINGTON

Answer: On this day in 1782, General George Washington, the commander in chief of the Continental Army, created the original Purple Heart, designated as the “Badge of Military Merit”. The Purple Heart award is a heart-shaped medal within a gold border, containing a profile of General George Washington. The Order of the Purple Heart, the oldest American military decoration for military merit, is awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces who have been killed or wounded in action against an enemy. It is also awarded to soldiers who have suffered maltreatment as prisoners of war.

 LADY  GODIVA

Answer: Godiva Chocolatier was founded in 1926 in Brussels, Belgium, by the Draps family who opened their first shop under its present name, in honor of the legend of Lady Godiva. Godiva founder and master chocolatier Joseph Draps sought a name for his company that embodied timeless values balanced with modern boldness. His inspiration came from the well-known Saxon legend of Lady Godiva who rode unclothed through the streets of Coventry to entreat her husband, Leofric the Dane, to lower taxes. Little did Joseph Draps realize that over time his chocolate would become as legendary as the lady herself.

JOHN GLEN

Answer: John Glenn became the first American astronaut to orbit the earth when he flew the Mercury-Atlas 6 named Friendship 7 for three earth orbits in 1962, and the first astronaut elected to Congress when he won a Senate seat in 1974. He's been the most successful American Astronaut-politician thus far, serving 25 years in the Senate. In 1984, Glenn sought the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. He withdrew from the race after winning only two delegates and finishing in 6th place. Glenn returned to space in 1998 aboard Space Shuttle Discovery while still a sitting Senator. The next year he retired from Congress.

STADUIM LIGHTS

Answer: On this day in 1988, the Chicago Cubs hosted the first night game in the history of Wrigley Field. The first-ever big league night game in professional baseball took place 50 years earlier in Cincinnati, Ohio. Over the next 13 seasons, the rest of the major league parks followed suit, with one exception, Wrigley Field. For 74 seasons, the Cubs played only day games at home. Finally, on August 8, 1988, the Cubs played the Philadelphia Phillies in the park’s first night game. Ninety-one-year-old Cubs fan Harry Grossman was chosen to turn on the lights. After counting to three, he flipped the switch, and announced “Let there be light.”
