Overall Question: What is the work of the Holy Spirit?

Memory Text: Romans 15:13 New International Version May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Sunday – Conviction of Sin

John 16:8-9 New English Translation And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong concerning sin and righteousness and judgment— 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me.

Romans 2:1 Good News Translation Do you, my friend, pass judgment on others? You have no excuse at all, whoever you are. For when you judge others and then do the same things which they do, you condemn yourself.

Matthew 7:3 Common English Bible Why do you see the splinter that’s in your brother’s or sister’s eye, but don’t notice the log in your own eye?

Matthew 7:3 COMMENTARY BY ALBERT BARNES Even a very small object that should hinder the vision of another, we should discern much more quickly than a much larger one in our own sight. This was also a proverb in frequent use among the Jews, and the same sentiment was common among the Greeks, and deserves to be expressed in every language.

Monday – The Need of Righteousness

Romans 5:10 Easy-to-Read Version I mean that while we were God’s enemies, he made friends with us through his Son’s death. And the fact that we are now God’s friends makes it even more certain that he will save us through his Son’s life.

Hebrews 4:15-16 New Century Version 15 For our high priest is able to understand our weaknesses. He was tempted in every way that we are, but he did not sin. 16 Let us, then, feel very sure that we can come before God’s throne where there is grace. There we can receive mercy and grace to help us when we need it.

Tuesday – Conviction About Judgment

John 16:8,11 New International Reader’s Version 8 When he comes, he will prove that the world’s people are guilty. He will prove their guilt concerning sin and godliness and judgment. 11 The world is guilty as far as judgment is concerned. That’s because the devil, the prince of this world, has already been judged.

John 16:11 COMMENTARY BY ALBERT BARNES The death of Christ was a judgment or a condemnation of Satan. In this struggle Jesus gained the victory and subdued the great enemy of man. This proves that God will execute judgment or justice on all his foes. If he vanquished his great enemy who had so long triumphed in this world, he will subdue all others in due time. All sinners in like manner may expect to be condemned. Of this great truth Jesus says the Holy Spirit will convince men.

1 Peter 5:8-9 New English Translation 8 Be sober and alert. Your enemy the devil, like a roaring lion, is on the prowl looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, strong in your faith, because you know that your brothers and sisters throughout the world are enduring the same kinds of suffering.

Wednesday – The Assurance of Salvation

1 John 5:12-13 Modern English Version Whoever has the Son has life, and whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

Romans 8:15-17 New Century Version 15 The Spirit we received does not make us slaves again to fear; it makes us children of God. With that Spirit we cry out, “Father.” 16 And the Spirit himself joins with our spirits to say we are God’s children. 17 If we are God’s children, we will receive blessings from God together with Christ. But we must suffer as Christ suffered so that we will have glory as Christ has glory.

Romans 8:15 FOOTNOTE IN NEW CENTURY VERSION “Father” Literally, “Abba, Father.” Jewish children called their fathers “Abba.”

2 Corinthians 5:5 English Standard Version He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

Ephesians 1:13-14 Modern English Version 13 In Him you also, after hearing the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and after believing in Him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

Ephesians 1:13 SDA BIBLE COMMENTARY There is an orderly change in the believer’s life: first there is the hearing, then the believing, and then the sealing that puts upon him, as it were, an impression or stamp… It is the Spirit of promise who seals, or identifies, those who are His own, and secures them until the day of redemption… The Holy spirit assures us that the promises of God are true, and it is this conviction that largely distinguishes believers from nonbelievers. The seal is placed upon all who choose to become saints.

Thursday – The Holy Spirit and Hope

Romans 5:4-5 New Life Version 4 When we have learned not to give up, it shows we have stood the test. When we have stood the test, it gives us hope. 5 Hope never makes us ashamed because the love of God has come into our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who was given to us.

Romans 15:13 New International Reader’s Version May the God who gives hope fill you with great joy. May you have perfect peace as you trust in him. May the power of the Holy Spirit fill you with hope.

1 Corinthians 13:13 God’s Word Translation So these three things remain: faith, hope, and love. But the best one of these is love.

Psalm 31:24 Holman Christian Standard Bible Be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the Lord.
