Justice From the Heart

The following are a brief, few, elements of a story told in:

Robert Keener, "An Army of Two,:  Reader's Digest, April 2018, pages 70-77.

For full enjoyment, read it there.

*  Joe Serna was an 18 year, veteran with 2 Purple Hearts and PTSD.

* Lou Olivera, was a veteran, and a Judge in Fayetteville, NC.

*  Joe Serna had come to court to confess to the Judge that at a previous hearing he had lied to the Judge when he stated he had not previously been drinking alcohol.

*  Judge Olivera sentenced Serna to spend one night in jail.  And then came to believe that doing so would likely trigger PTSD symptoms in Serna.

*  As Serna was processed and confined to the jail cell, he felt the symptoms returning and knew a flashback was about to happen.

* At that moment the cell door opened, the jailor throw a mattress on the floor.

*  As Judge Olivera walked into the cell he said, in effect (not actual words), to Serna, we are going to handle this night together, my brother.
