Lesson 6 - The Sealed People of God

Recommended Posts

james423

Overall Question: What are the characteristics of the sealed people of God?

Memory Verse: Revelation 7:14 Contemporary English Version “Sir,” I answered, “you must know.” Then he told me: “These are the ones who have gone through the great suffering. They have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb and have made them white.

Sunday – Restraining the Winds

Revelation 7:1-3 New Life Version After this I saw four angels. They were standing at the four corners of the earth. They were holding back the four winds of the earth so no wind would blow on the earth or the sea or on any tree. 2 I saw another angel coming from the east. He was carrying the mark of the living God. He called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to hurt the earth and sea. 3 The angel from the east said, “Do not hurt the earth or the sea or the trees until we have put the mark of God on the foreheads of the servants He owns.”

Revelation 7:2 SDA BIBLE COMMENTARY the present passage points to a sealing of God’s people that prepares them to stand through the fearful times of stress that will precede the second advent. As in ancient times a seal on an object testified to its ownership, so the seal of God upon His people proclaims that He has recognized them as His own.

2 Peter 3:9-14 New English Translation 9 The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some regard slowness, but is being patient toward you, because he does not wish for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief; when it comes, the heavens will disappear with a horrific noise, and the celestial bodies will melt away in a blaze, and the earth and every deed done on it will be laid bare. 11 Since all these things are to melt away in this manner, what sort of people must we be, conducting our lives in holiness and godliness, 12 while waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God? Because of this day, the heavens will be burned up and dissolve, and the celestial bodies will melt away in a blaze! 13 But, according to his promise, we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness truly resides.14 Therefore, dear friends, since you are waiting for these things, strive to be found at peace, without spot or blemish, when you come into his presence.

Ephesians 4:30 Good News Translation And do not make God's Holy Spirit sad; for the Spirit is God's mark of ownership on you, a guarantee that the Day will come when God will set you free.

Ephesians 4:30 COMMENTARY BY ALBERT BARNES Do not act towards the Holy Spirit in a manner which would produce pain in the bosom of a friend who loves you. There is a course of conduct which will drive that Spirit from the mind as if he were grieved and pained--as a course of ingratitude and sin would pain the heart of an earthly friend, and cause him to leave you." If asked what that conduct is, we may reply, open and gross sins…anger… licentious thoughts and desires…. ingratitude… neglect…resistance [doing the opposite of what the Spirit wants us to do}.

Monday – The Sealed People of God

Revelation 7:4-8 Common English Bible 4 Then I heard the number of those who were sealed: one hundred forty-four thousand, sealed from every tribe of the Israelites: 5 From the tribe of Judah, twelve thousand were sealed; from the tribe of Reuben, twelve thousand; from the tribe of Gad, twelve thousand; 6 from the tribe of Asher, twelve thousand; from the tribe of Naphtali, twelve thousand; from the tribe of Manasseh, twelve thousand; 7 from the tribe of Simeon, twelve thousand; from the tribe of Levi, twelve thousand; from the tribe of Issachar, twelve thousand; 8 from the tribe of Zebulun, twelve thousand; from the tribe of Joseph, twelve thousand; from the tribe of Benjamin, twelve thousand were sealed.

Revelation 7:4 SDA BIBLE COMMENTARY The 144,000 are here presented as those who are “able to stand” through the terrible events portrayed in ch. 6:17. They have the “seal of the living God” (ch. 7:2) and are protected in the time of universal destruction, as were those who possessed the mark in Ezekiel’s vision (Eze. 9:6). They are approved of Heaven, for John later sees them with the Lamb on Mt. Zion (Rev. 14:1). They are declared to be without guile and without fault (Rev. 14:5). John hears them singing a song that “no man could learn” (Rev. 14:3). They are designated as “first-fruits unto God and to the Lamb” (Rev. 14:4).

Tuesday – The Great Multitude

Revelation 7:9-10 Holman Christian Standard Bible 9 After this I looked, and there was a vast multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language, which no one could number, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were robed in white with palm branches in their hands. 10 And they cried out in a loud voice: Salvation belongs to our God,

who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!

Revelation 7:9 COMMENTARY BY ALBERT BARNES the vision seems to be transferred from earth to heaven--for the multitudes which he saw appeared "before the throne," (Re 7:9) that is, before the throne of God in heaven. The design seems to be to carry the mind forward quite beyond the storms and tempests of earth--the scenes of woe and sorrow--the days of error, darkness, declension, and persecution into that period when the church should be triumphant in heaven. Instead, therefore, of leaving the impression that the hundred and forty-four thousand would be all that would be saved, the eye is directed to an innumerable host, gathered from all ages, all climes, and all people, triumphant in glory. The multitude that John thus saw was not, therefore, I apprehend, the same as the hundred and forty- four thousand, but a far greater number--the whole assembled host of the redeemed in heaven, gathered there as victors, with palm-branches, the symbols of triumph, in their hands. The object of the vision is to cheer those who are desponding in times of religious declension and in seasons of persecution, and when the number of true Christians seems to be small, with the assurance that an immense host shall be redeemed from our world, and be gathered triumphant before the throne.

Deuteronomy 8:11-17 Easy-to-Read Version 11 “Be careful. Don’t forget the Lord your God! Be careful to obey the commands, laws, and rules that I give you today. 12 Then you will have plenty to eat, and you will build good houses and live in them. 13 Your cattle, sheep, and goats will grow large. You will get plenty of gold and silver. You will have plenty of everything. 14 When that happens, you must be careful not to become proud. You must not forget the Lord your God. You were slaves in Egypt, but he made you free and brought you out of that land. 15 He led you through that great and terrible desert where there were poisonous snakes and scorpions. The ground was dry, and there was no water anywhere. But he gave you water out of a solid rock. 16 In the desert he fed you manna—something your ancestors had never seen. He tested you to make you humble so that everything would go well for you in the end. 17 Don’t ever say to yourself, ‘I got all this wealth by my own power and ability.’

Wednesday – Those Who Follow the Lamb

Revelation 14:1-5 New Century Version Then I looked, and there before me was the Lamb standing on Mount Zion. With him were one hundred forty-four thousand people who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. 2 And I heard a sound from heaven like the noise of flooding water and like the sound of loud thunder. The sound I heard was like people playing harps. 3 And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders. No one could learn the new song except the one hundred forty-four thousand who had been bought from the earth. 4 These are the ones who did not do sinful things with women, because they kept themselves pure. They follow the Lamb every place he goes. These one hundred forty-four thousand were bought from among the people of the earth as people to be offered to God and the Lamb. 5 They were not guilty of telling lies; they are without fault.

Revelation 14:4 SDA BIBLE COMMENTARY The saints are here called virgins because they have either kept themselves aloof from Babylon or no longer have dealings with her. They have refused any connection with Babylon and her daughters at the time when these have become the agents of Satan in his final effort to eradicate the saints. They were not defiled by association with this union of religious elements rallied by Satan, though they may formerly have belonged to one of the various bodies now amalgamated.

Revelation 14:12 God’s Word Translation In this situation God’s holy people, who obey his commands and keep their faith in Jesus, need endurance.

Revelation 17:5 New International Version The name written on her forehead was a mystery: Babylon the Great, the mother of prostitutes and of the abominations of the earth.

Revelation 14:4 New International Reader’s Version They had not committed sexual sins with women. They had kept themselves pure. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They were purchased from among human beings as a first offering to God and the Lamb.

Thursday – Salvation to Our God and the Lamb

Revelation 14:5 Modern English Version No lie was found in their mouths, for they are without fault before the throne of God.

Revelation 14:5 COMMENTARY BY ALBERT BARNES Those living in the time of John were suffering persecution, and, in the previous chapters, he had described more fearful trials yet to come on the church. In these trials, therefore, present and prospective, there was a propriety in fixing the thoughts on the final triumph of the redeemed--that glorious state in heaven where all persecution shall cease, and where all the ransomed of the Lord shall stand before his throne.

2 Peter 3:14 New Living Translation And so, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight.

Jude 24-25 New Century Version 24 God is strong and can help you not to fall. He can bring you before his glory without any wrong in you and can give you great joy. 25 He is the only God, the One who saves us. To him be glory, greatness, power, and authority through Jesus Christ our Lord for all time past, now, and forever. Amen.

Romans 3:19-24 Easy-to-Read Version 19 What the law says is for those who are under the law. It stops anyone from making excuses. And it brings the whole world under God’s judgment, 20 because no one can be made right with God by following the law. The law only shows us our sin. 21 But God has a way to make people right, and it has nothing to do with the law. He has now shown us that new way, which the law and the prophets told us about. 22 God makes people right through their faith in Jesus Christ. He does this for all who believe in Christ. Everyone is the same. 23 All have sinned and are not good enough to share God’s divine greatness. 24 They are made right with God by his grace. This is a free gift. They are made right with God by being made free from sin through Jesus Christ.

Romans 3:22 SDA BIBLE COMMENTARY righteousness is not received as a reward for our faith in Christ…When in love and gratitude the believer in Jesus commits himself without reservation to the mercy and will of God, the righteousness of justification is imputed to him. And as he continues daily in this experience of trust, surrender, and fellowship, his faith increases, enabling him to receive more and more of the imparted righteousness of sanctification.

My pleasure with God's help and guidance.  I get more out of the Sabbath School lessons by compiling these lists as a first step of studying a particular lesson.

Its to bad you don't include Friday's "Further Thought," there's a great quote by EGW about the 144,000:

Christ says that there will be those in the church who will present fables and suppositions, when God has given grand, elevating, ennobling truths which should ever be kept in the treasure house of the mind. When men pick up this theory and that theory, when they are curious to know something it is not necessary for them to know, God is not leading them. It is not His plan that His people shall present something which they have to suppose, which is not taught in the Word. It is not His will that they shall get into controversy over questions which will not help them spiritually, such as, Who is to compose the hundred and forty-four thousand? This those who are the elect of God will in a short time know without question. {1SM 174.3}

Too bad you chose to focus on this part of the message. I like the focus that the OP used here:

time to stop living off the husks of other people's "failings" and give the true message of Jesus Christ and His "everlasting love," which I would imagine has something to do with "the everlasting gospel."

The seal of YHVH, according to scripture, is a mark inscribed on the forehead indicating that the bearer is a servant, or slave, owned by YHVH. This mark will make them easy targets for those bearing the Mark of the Beast.

Maybe so, but but the mark of the beast will the wicked an easy target for the army of God at the time of the end.  Is it possible that we mere human believers will be part of that Armageddon army?

Revelation 7 appears to jump ahead in the timeline of the Last Day events.

The 144K are resurrected at the beginning of the 1K year reign of the Restored Kingdom of Israel. The Restored Kingdom of Israel is created in a day when the city from the stars arrives and the 144K are resurrected. This kingdom will rule the world with an iron rod, that is, tolerate no rebellion during its 1K year reign.

At the end of the 1K years, everyone else is resurrected, everyone born since life on Earth began. This is the time when the Four Beasts arise to rule the world for their allotted times. This is the time period when the Two Witnesses and the Three Angels give their messages to everyone who has ever lived.

This is the final test, to choose to join the Kingdom of YHVH, or not. The mark of YHVH, his seal, is inscribed on the foreheads of those who, with informed consent, agree to become his servants, to face almost certain death at the hands of Satan's uncountable followers.

The Great Crowd assembles for the victory celebration after the Beasts and the evil empires arising after the 2nd Resurrection are destroyed forever and those who were martyred were resurrected once again to be given eternal life.

The Book of Revelation appears to be pieced together, perhaps from fragments that were collected and later published.

In chapter 7 the 144K have already been resurrected, they have established the Restored Kingdom of Israel, and have ruled the world for 1K years. After the 2nd Resurrection, in which everyone else is resurrected from their DNA and life records by the Spirit of YHVH, the 4 Beasts arise, destroy the Restored Kingdom of Israel, and rule the world in sequence.

It's at this point that the 144K are inscribed with the Seal of YHVH, indicating that they are his servants, and even if they are killed, they will still be safe. Among the billions and billions of people who are resurrected at the 2nd Resurrection, are those who will listen to the Two Witnesses and the Three Angels and consent to join the Kingdom of YHVH. They, too, will receive the mark of YHVH, his official seal, inscribed on their foreheads.

Satan's armies will slaughter the servants of YHVH without mercy until the war is stopped.

Then comes Judgment Day.

I've never heard of these events being post-millennial.  Scripture is clear this will happen prior to the start of the millennium (to me at least).
