Tithe

SDA members may have little understanding as to how the Tithe that they give is used.  Recently a Conference in the U.S. published a statement to its members as to how the Tithe is used in that Conference.  I will suggest that the manner in which it is used in that local Conference is similar to how it is used in the rest of the United States:

28%     To provide for pastoral support in the local Conference.

25%     Is sent to the Union, NAD and GC to support SDA ministry outside of the Conference.  A small part of this may later be returned to the local Conference.

13%     is spent on education and schools in the local Conference, and to also include the associated SDA college.

11%     Is  spent on funding the unfunded obligations of the SDA retirement system *See Note below.

11%     Is spent on funding local Conference operations related to ministry support.

8%     Is spent of certain local Conference support, expenses and legal support.

4%     Is spent on increasing the local Conference working capital.

 *  NOTE:  As first put in place, the SDA Retirement system was not funded on a proper basis.   This amount is designed to help remedy that situation.   Changes have taken place in that system in which  current employees have a ":defined contribution" system as opposed to the older "defined benefit" system.  It should be noted that specific "Regional Conferences" do not pay this fee due to the fact that they are considered not to have been complicit in the lack of funding in the first system and in addition, they are on a retirement system that is separate from the retirement system for employees of the other U.S. Conferences.

The figures that I have posted above are from the local Conference statement   sent to its members.  The figures that I post below, are my analysis of the above:

36%  is sent to higher levels of SDA administration, to include the problems with the former SDA retirement system.

28%     Is spent on local congregational pastoral support.  This is the fundamental reason why a local congregation must have a high level of tithe income in order to have a dedicated pastor who does not have other congregations.

23%   Is spent on local Conference administration.  NOTE that this is almost as much as is spent on local congregational support.

13%     Is spent on SDA education.  IOW, SDA education costs 46.4% of what direct pastoral support costs.
