Cough Suppressants

Recommended Posts

Gregory Matthews

A 2007 article published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Compared the use of honey, dextromethorphan and and no treatment in providing relief of children's cough and sleep issues related to an upper respiratory infection.  It found that honey provided teh most relief, and that dextromethorphan did not provide improvement of symptoms.  This confirmed a study in 2004, in the journal Pediatrics.

NOTE:  Dextromethorphan is a very common in cough medications sold over the counter.  It can have very serious side effects to include coma and death.

Benzonate use is recommended to be limited to patients who have lung cancer.

With thanks to:  Worst Pills, Best Pills News, January 2020, "Review of the Cough Medications Dextromethorphan and Benzonatate,"  beginning on page 5.

The "honey" alternative isn't such a hot idea if given to young children (under age 2), as it's long been known to cause infant botulism.

Pam correct.  My comments were directed toward adults.  I should have mentionef children under 2 years.
